Heli Calendar - Designing a calendar interface for the Android

Mentor: Manoj Prasad, Danielle Cummings

Overview:
Heli Calendar is a calendar which uses the affordances of a clock to display all the events in a calendar. The calendar is a break from the traditional tabular format and utilizes the commonly used circular motion control (i.e. ipod) in order to interact with a calendar in a data structure similar to a helicoid. Further explanation of the current interface idea can be provided by the mentors.

This calendar will bring in the information from contacts in the phone (Android API) or contacts from gmail (Google contacts API) in order to identify the persons who are part of various meetings or events. This is a data visualization project which focuses on building a new interface for calendars and events for touch enabled Android phones. This project will rely on the use of information retrieval in order to manage contacts. Consider creating a socialized calendar capable of connecting to Facebook or other web services that have both contacts and events.

Problem Statement:
Design an interface for a calendar on a touch enabled Android phone. The calendar must be a helicoid.

The team proposal should address:
  • How does a user navigate in the calendar?
  • How will you incorporate contact information?
  • What different views will you provide the user while maintaining the helicoid? (day, month, year...)
  • What information is being displayed on the calendar and how?
  • What other services will you syncing information with?
