Interactive parking and campus map application

Mentor: Chris Aikens, George Lucchese

Overview:
Finding parking spots and routes to different buildings around campus can be very difficult. On different days and at different times the parking lot restrictions change. In addition, campus construction can block access to lots and can create biking and walking delays when trying to get to class. Faculty and visitors are also affected by the unclear parking procedures and changes in road/building access. The information is available on various TAMU sites (such as transportation services) but it is not readily accessible or interactive.

For this project, students will design an interactive map and parking application for the Android. This application should be usable by students, faculty, and campus visitors. The application must include at least one search capability for maps and at least one for parking. For example, a map search may allow the user to type in a building name and return a list of potential parking lots with walking routes to get there. A potential parking search would show the user where their permit is good at the current time and the location of handicap, pay, and temporary parking locations as needed/requested. The application must also contain at least one social aspect. For example, allowing users to report accidents, construction delays, or other pertinent information would be of benefit to all users. You could even overlay campus organization information on the map (such as highlighting buildings where meetings or events are taking place) in order to inform users of events. You could even take in a student’s calendar and give them personalized directions to their classes and meetings. There are many other potential social aspects that could be included, but this list is a good jumping off point.

Problem Statement:
Create an interactive Android application for TAMU parking and campus maps. Include searching and an aspect of social interaction or personalization.

The team proposal should address:
  • What initial searches are you planning to implement?
  • What form(s) of social interaction or personalization will you include?
  • How will you manage updates on parking information or construction?
